I’ll Stick Around Here for a While

Still no luck doing what I wanted to do. I’m just not smart enough. It’s a good thing to realize your limitations. The only problem is that my limitations seem to be increasing. I feel cheated. I thought we’re supposed to get smarter as we get older.

So, I’m going to stick with this site for a while. There are some things that I don’t like about the theme. The orange font is very Halloweenish. I also don’t like the white border that is around the photos.

Sad to say, I don’t seem to be able to change it unless I pay some money. Truth is, I’d be HAPPY to pay, but the only payment they will accept is PayPal which doesn’t seem to like anything about me at all.

So, I’m stuck for the time being with some garish typefaces and an ugly white border around my photos, but I’ll get it all sorted out eventually.

The main thing is that I can upload photos again. To prove that, here is a photo of a mystery city in Europe:

Mystery City Cow

If anybody wants to make a guess as to what city, let me give you a hint. See the cow on the fake spit on top of the building. The cow is the clue. There are many, many cows all around the city – some of them quite spectacular.

Tomorrow I hope to start posting something other than filler.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE:  Ah HAH! I guess I did find a way to fix the ugly white border. And the thumbnails are bigger also!

    Hi,

Good stuff! Don’t give yourself a hard time about the troubles you are having moving blogs. It’s a challenging task for the best of them and I think you have done well!!

    A couple of pointers:

    1) Just be aware that a hosted WP blog through WP.com is restricted compared to a self hosted WP blog like the old one you were running. This might not be an issue for you.

    2) Your front page takes for ever to load and you might like to think about limiting the number of posts that are displayed on your home page. This might not be an issue for someone with a fast connection (like yourself now) but consider us poor sods on dialup.

    3) Are you planning on staying with this blog permanently? If yes – you could do what’s called a 301 redirect from old domain address to new one.

    4) The European city is Luxembourg. Any prizes? Perhaps a ride on the “Hog” next time I’m up your way!

    5) On the subject of bikes…. now that you have the beast in the garage… How will you find time for blogging?

    Thanks Robert,

I’m happy for the moment – and thanks for your help.

I’m thinking about your first point. They have ‘options’ that you can purchase which give you most of the same capabilities as an independent site. One of them is to use your own domain name! I’m going to check that out today. That would solve ALL my problems.

I have a LOT of things to clean up. All of the image links point back to the stuff on Global’s server. I need to find a way to change ALL of the image links at once.

I’m going to limit the number of posts on the first page to 10 to help with the speed problem.

I”m probably going to put a redirect on the original site today. I haven’t yet decided if I’m going to stay on a WordPress located site or mover to Quadrahosting. It depends on whether WordPress will let me use the URL of http://www.messersmith.name/wordpress, which is what I have printed on thousands of cards that I”ve handed out.

And finally, sorry – your guess of Luxembourg is interesting, but incorrect.

I’ll be doing a post in the next few days called “The Cows of P*****” Maybe that’s a better hint.

    Later,
    MadDog

By the way, you’re welcome on the Hog anytime you’re in Madang.
