I haven’t had a reliable income for over thirty years, being at the mercy of church mission committees, so that’s nothing different. At least I do have some control over my income now. It all depends on luck and how hard I’m willing to work.

I’m learning to use Sonar which allows me to record (and process) my guitar, and also do MIDI. I have a little 2-octave MIDI keyboard that I use for input. My keyboard skills are very basic, so after the initial input, I spend a lot of time tweaking. It can be very painstaking, but if you’re patient, you can eventually get decent results.

Hey MadDog. I really enjoyed this post, because I felt I got to know more about where you live and what life is like there in Madang.

PS– The laughing lady has obviously never seen or heard of Willie Nelson, either!

You got the “goods” to make a living at writing and photography, but having done freelance writing/editing for so many years, I know how much work and hustling that takes. Still, it’s a happy way to live, and one is getting paid, often, to write about things you’re interested in and learn about things you’re interested in. I sure wish you all the best.

Walt, it’s about the third time in my wayward life that I took something that I liked (computers) and tried to make a living from it. I think that that’s almost always a mistake. After all this time, I just want to use a comuter like a hammer. I don’t care how it works. Sadly, I’m probably locked into it for life as my bread-winner. However, this does stimulate one to branch out to other things. Sixty-six is a little late to be changing careers, but I’m determined to make a significant portion of my income in the future from writing and photography.

I’m curious about your music hobby. Do you use MIDI devices and composition software? It is something that I have often thought that I’d like to try. I play a little guitar and keyboard, but my music theory is very weak. I’m basically looking for a way to ‘cheat’. The notes are in my head perfectly, I just have no way to get the into an instrument.

Nice pictures and story. I do hope you have a chance to get out more like this. I know what you mean about getting tired of computers. I’ve been a software developer for the past 25 years and that sometimes seems like a long time. But on the weekends, I’m learning to do music on my home computer which I enjoy a lot! I guess it’s something like your photoshopping is to you.
